The president of the Generalitat Valenciana Autonomous Community
Authority, Eduardo Zaplana, is opening today the greatest
exhibition of sacred art - The Light of Images - an event
which will be followed at night by a concert by the Generalitat
Valenciana choir at the Seminary Church in Segorbe.

The delegation, which will consist, amongst other authorities,
of the president of the Regional Authority, Carlos Fabra,
the bishop of Segorbe-Castellón, Juan Antonio Reig,
the Valencian Minister for Culture and Education, Manuel Tarancón,
the undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture and Education,
Carmen Nácher and the mayor of Segorbe, Rafael Calvo,
will start the visit from the cloister of the Cathedral, calling
at the church of San Martin, and ending at the church of San
Joaquín y Santa Ana, a journey through time from the
14th century until the early 19th century.
The
exhibition, located in these three buildings, cathedral and
cloister, church of San Martín and church of San Joaquín
y Santa Ana, contains many works not hitherto displayed and
unknown, from painting in the form of splendid altarpieces,
frescos from the vault and nave of the cathedral itself, precious
metalwork with processional crosses and chalices, sculpture,
textile items, including chasubles, bishops' capes and wonderful
palliums, documents and sheet music, many of these belonging
to the cathedral archives and which had not been shown until
the present day, all exhibited in these three buildings which
act as the setting for the event.

Each
of the buildings follows a chronological order, cloister,
14th and 15th century, 16th century cathedral containing
17th and 18th century works, San Martín church,
17th century and Santa Ana, 18th and early 19th century:
a trip through history covering the 700 years of the
former Segorbe-Castellón diocese.
The
concert to be held at eight in the evening at Segorbe
Seminary Church, performed by the Generalitat Valenciana
choir, will perform the music from the scores and archives
recovered for the event, meaning that this day will
be a unique event indeed.

The
Light of Images exhibition, which will be in Segorbe until
March 2002, has also included two series of concerts, coinciding
with the Christmas and Easter festivities.
The
exhibition is an ambitious project by the General Heritage
Administration of Valencia Autonomous Community Authority
and the Council of Segorbe, with a budget of 889 million pesetas
and including a total number of 600 restored items.
110
restorers have worked for two years on this exhibition, on
the recovery and cleaning of the works shown at this great
exhibition, apart from the restoration, renovation and preparation
of the spaces to act as venues for the event.
The
exhibition will also be accompanied by sacred music taken
from the scores in the cathedral archives kept there until
the present time and that today can be seen at the exhibition,
sounds which will accompany the visitor in the trip through
the show and which will help to create the context of each
historical age more vividly.
