Concerts: music as a complement to the exhibition

As part of the activities arranged as a complement to the exhibition, Segorbe's Light of Images gives great importance to the music created by the maestros of the Cathedral itself, kept in the cathedral archive and recovered for the exhibition. Each of the four stages of the historical period covered by the exhibition thus has a characteristic and unique sound of its own, which makes the visit more pleasant and allows an overall understanding of each of the four historical periods depicted by the exhibition.

But furthermore The Light of Images has arranged concerts for the music to take on the leading role and not only act as a complement. Segorbe Seminary church is to become an occasional auditorium. The Generalitat Valenciana choir performed a concert on the same day as the exhibition was opened, the 26th September.

The renowned group Capella de Ministrers gave the second concert at the exhibition, last 6th October. A programme with twenty pieces with the title "A Mediterranean view of medieval music", which covered unpublished works by Valencian authors, reflected in the record published by The Light of Images for the exhibition.

The Light of Images has programmed two series of concerts during the exhibition. The First of these, "Religious Music at Christmas", started last Saturday 1st December, with the performance of the Lluís Vich Chamber Choir.

The "Religious Music at Christmas" series has scheduled a further three concerts at Segorbe Seminary church. On 15th December the group Estil Concertant performed, covering different projects for recovery of 18th century Spanish music and European baroque chamber music, including the "Advent Carols" in which works of 18th century Valencian composers were performed.

The Capella de Ministrers gave its second concert at the Seminary church on 22nd December. The programme included the theme "Renaissance Christmas in Castile (15th century) and Valencia (16th century)".

The concert by Orpheo Consort was held on 28th December, as part of the first Christmas cycle.

Dolnoslaska (Poland) Philharmonic orchestra closed the cycle with 2 New Year concerts on 3rd January 2002 at Viver Cultural Centre at 8 p.m. and on 5th January 2002 at 6 p.m. at Segorbe Seminary Church.

The second cycle of concerts was programmed for the month of March, coinciding with Christian Easter, entitled "Religious music at the time of the Passion".

As part of this second cycle, last 27th March 2002 at 7 p.m. at Segorbe Seminary Church the Capella de Ministrers performed the First Concert. The programme included the theme of "Lamentations, cantatas and carols" by José Gil Pérez, former Choir Master of Segorbe Cathedral choir, a sample of the historical recovery of Valencia's hitherto unpublished musical heritage.

Visits

Up to Sunday 9th December 41,706 persons had attended the exhibition. The day with greatest attendance was 6th December, with 2258 visits. In this particular ranking, the second place was taken by another bank holiday, 9th October, with 1413 visits.

The profile of the visits shows that in the week most of those coming are organised groups from schools or civil groups such as pensioners' or housewives associations, while at the weekend there is a greater number of visits as well as a change in the profile. Private visits go up and organised groups go down.

Amongst the more illustrious visitors we can mention: the President of Generalitat Valenciana Autonomous Community Authority, Eduardo Zaplana, who opened the exhibition last 26th September; Manuel Tarancón, Valencian Minister of Culture and Education; Carmen Nácher, Undersecretary of the Culture and Education Ministry, Juan Antonio Reig Pla, bishop of Segorbe-Castellón; Carlos Fabra, President of the Regional Authority; Serafín Castellano, Health Minister, the Parliamentary committee, which met in Segorbe 600 years ago, on its way towards Valencia; members of the Valencian Culture Ministry or Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua; Rodolfo Martín Villa, politician; businessman José Lladró; Julio de Miguel, President of Bancaja; Alicia de Miguel, spokeswoman of the Generalitat Valenciana authority; the members of the commission for Culture and Education of the Valencian Parliament; Luís Alegre, Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports of La Rioja Authority and Domingo Rivera, General Director for Culture of La Rioja.

Apart from all this, on 13th December, Spanish National Radio issued its national programme from Segorbe, with a key role being played by The Light of Images. The star hosts of the station, such as Julio César Iglesias or Nieves Herrero, gave their programmes from Segorbe.
