The
passing of time caused serious damage to the fresco. During the
civil war a mortar bomb destroyed part of the vault and the experts
from San Pío V Museum proceeded to restore this, rebuilding
the structure of the damaged vault and retouching the mural by means
of a neutral inpainting which did not define the forms destroyed.
In the photo taken in 1997 you can see the poor state of the fresco
very clearly, with a lot of dirt on the surface, damage caused by
damp, losses of the pictorial layer as well as cracks all over the
surface.
